This fascinating guided, walking tour, gives you an insight as to how Newmarket developed from being a small, relatively unimportant settlement in the 1200s to a favourite destination for Royalty in the time of James I, Charles I and the most notorious of the Stuart Kings, the Merry Monarch – Charles II.

You will hear how the town developed, in the words of James I from a ‘quaint little village’ into the Home of Horseracing but you will also learn that there is more to Newmarket than just the 3,000 horses in training in the town.

The tour starts at from the Bill Tutte Memorial where you will meet your guide and then enjoy the sights of historical interest including Palace House, The Jockey Club Rooms and Tattersalls, the world-famous auction house where horses are still sold in guineas. You will see where kings built their palaces, the cottage where one of them housed his best-known mistress, Nell Gwynn, on his visits to Newmarket and All Saints Church which a famous family had turned around because it got in the way of their building plans!

10.00: Starting at the top of the high street by the Bill Tutte Memorial, the Walking Tour will take in sights of historical interest. Learn more about Nell Gwynn’s House, the Jockey Club Rooms, All Saints Church and Tattersalls.

11:30: Enjoy a tea/coffee along with a festive mince pie at the traditional Nancy’s Tea Rooms

Please be advised that tours depart promptly at the scheduled start time so we recommend arriving at the meeting point a minimum of 15 minutes in advance.
