By kind permission, Discover Newmarket is able to offer an exclusive opportunity to meet top trainer William Haggas and be taken behind the scenes at Somerville Lodge. This personal guided experience includes a tour of the yard where His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty Queen Camilla, have horses in training. You will then be taken to the Gallops to see his horses being exercised.

Your tour concludes with a visit to the impressive National Horseracing Museum which is located on the former site of King Charles II’s Palace and Stables. After enjoying brunch in the Tack Room, you will be able to spend the afternoon learning about the fascinating history of the town and how Royalty has played such a huge part in racing throughout the centuries including of course, today. Watch the delightful TV coverage of when the late Queen Elizabeth II won the 2016 Royal Ascot Gold Cup with her horse Estimate and view the Royal Racing silks. Explore the amazing collection of British Sporting Art and meet the resident horses.

William Haggas is one of the most respected trainers in the headquarters of British racing in Newmarket. Since training his first winner in 1987 he has had over 2,000 winners. 2021 was a record breaking year with over 180 winners including three Group 1’s.

Please note, these are only approximate timings:

8.00 am Meet outside the National Horseracing Museum and embark on the Discover Newmarket Tour Bus. Your day begins with a morning driving tour of the home of horseracing taking in the famous sights including some of the hallowed training grounds.

8.30 am Arrive at Somerville Lodge where you will meet seven times Classic-winning and royal trainer William Haggas and his team. Enjoy a personal behind the scenes tour before heading to the Gallops to watch the yard’s horses go about their daily exercise.

11am Return to the National Horseracing Museum where after a brief site overview you will enjoy brunch at the Tack Room.

You will then be left to explore this impressive five-acre site at leisure.
